Board Members Reference: REQ01033 Ayrshire College is seeking to fill non-executive member vacancies on our Board. The Board is delighted to invite applications from people with a belief in the value of college education and a commitment to widening access, lifelong learning and the student experience. Non-executive members are independent of the College and are a public appointment made in line with ministerial guidance and approved by the Scottish Government. This ensures that our recruitment processes are open, fair and transparent. Non-executive members bring a wide variety of professional high level executive skills and experience in a variety of sectors to the Board. In addition, the different perspectives everyone brings to discussion and decision-making is key to the Board operating effectively. It is unlikely that anyone joining the Board will possess all skills, knowledge and experience necessary to fulfill the role from the start, and we ensure new members receive appropriate support and training. Previous experience in the college sector is not essential, however, applicants should have an interest in education and be enthusiastic about using their expertise to contribute to the College’s mission and Strategic Ambition. Applicants should also share the College’s values and demonstrate their commitment to the Nine Principles of Public Life, in both applications and interviews. Applications are encouraged from individuals representing the communities of Ayrshire particularly with trustee, non-executive or executive board level experience. We also especially welcome those with experience in large or complex organisations including those working within one of the following sectors: aerospace, finance and/or accountancy, financial audit/risk management, digital (particularly artificial intelligence or cyber security), renewable energies, transformation or procurement. By the nature of a non-executive member role, the time commitment will vary throughout the academic year. To fulfil role duties and responsibilities, and contributing to Board core business, members' time commitment is around 15 working days a year. This time includes preparation, travel, and attendance at Board and committee meetings, along with training/development activities and internal/external events such as graduation ceremonies. Board members do not receive remuneration for their roles. Reasonable travel and subsistence expenses incurred as a result of carrying out the duties of the appointment will be reimbursed. All members receive induction and support in their role, plus an offer of a College laptop with the appropriate software and applications. The length of a member's first term of office is for up to 4 years, with reappointment to a second term of up to 4 years being subject to performance and requirements of the Board at that time, conditional on final approval by the Scottish Government. Please note roles are subject to satisfactory PVG scheme membership. It is the intention that the following the closing date of 13 March 2026, interviews will be held on 27 April 2026. If you wish to discuss the role of the Board Member further, please contact the Board Governance Adviser, Hilary Denholm. Read more about what the Board does and how it operates on our website.
