The RSPB is seeking a passionate and skilled Community Engagement Officer to help deliver an inspiring community-based conservation education programme as part of the PeacePlus Nature project. Working across the Fermanagh region, this full-time role will be at the heart of engaging diverse communities across landscapes, supporting environmental action through transformative, hands-on experiences. You will work closely with schools, youth and community organisations, landowners, and local authorities to deliver education sessions, site visits, volunteer opportunities and training activities.

PeacePlus Nature is an ambitious €20.8 million programme that brings together nine partners to tackle the decline in priority species and habitats in Northern Ireland, and the border counties of Ireland.

The project, supported by PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB), will work to restore blanket bog, lowland wet grassland and limestone grassland and priority species from breeding waders to Marsh Fritillary Butterfly. RSPB NI in partnership with BirdWatch Ireland, Butterfly Conservation, Monaghan County Council, River Blackwater Catchment Trust, Truagh Development Association, Lough Neagh Partnership, NI Water and An Taisce, will work to deliver this.

PEACEPLUS is a cross-border funding Programme supported by the European Union, the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Government of Ireland, and the Northern Ireland administration.

Whats the role about?

You will deliver RSPB NIs engagement activity as part of this project; co-creating and delivering inspiring conservation experiences, building strong partnerships, and nurturing and upskilling the next generation of environmental leaders. Were looking for individuals with proven experience in community engagement - particularly with young people - excellent communication and teamwork skills, and a background in co-designing and delivering impactful engagement or training programmes. Youll have knowledge of species and practical conservation as well as experience working with diverse community (ideally cross-border) groups. This post will:

  • Support delivery of the RSPBs PeacePlus Nature engagement programme
  • Build and maintain relationships with partners within the project and externally
  • Support creation and delivery of training/upskilling activities including creation of resources
  • Support the roll-out of an Environmental Leaders Programme
  • Support creation of educational and engagement resources, including a Volunteer Skills Passport
  • Deliver a series of education sessions, site visits, and volunteer opportunities
  • Collate information and report on community impact
  • Provide activities that support the wider aims of the PeacePlus Nature project

Essential skills, knowledge, & experience

  • Experience in community engagement - with the ability to build trust, listen actively and work collaboratively with a wide range of people.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills - able to communicate clearly, adapt style to different audiences and contribute positively to team working.
  • Experience developing and delivering engagement programmes - including training, workshops or learning activities that are accessible and inclusive.
  • Knowledge of species conservation - or a willingness to develop understanding of conservation principles, ecological issues and best practice.
  • Experience working with diverse community groups - ideally including cross-border or multi-community collaboration, with sensitivity to different cultures, perspectives and lived experiences

Additional Information

This role will be based in Fermanagh and will require travel in rural areas where public transport is not available. We envisage that the successful candidate will hold a full driving licence that is valid in the UK and access to a suitably insured vehicle.

This is a fixed-term roles for up to 37 months, full-time for 37.5 hours per week. The RSPB reserves the right to extend or make this role permanent without further advertising dependent on business needs at the end of the contract term.
