Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist
Main area Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Grade: Consultant. Contract: Permanent. Hours: Full time or Part time. 10 sessions per week.
We are seeking a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist to join our Women’s Health team at Southmead Hospital. The role involves providing high‑quality care, including complex abortion services.
Main duties of the job
Clinical management of patients and continuity of care during absences.
Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.
Participation in Clinical Audit Programme.
Cross‑site working within Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, including travel to other sites as required.
Qualifications
MRCOG or equivalent.
Maintain full registration with the GMC.
CCT in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, entered on the GMC Specialist Register at commencement of post; or within six months of achieving CCT, or CESR with CESR in place at interview.
Higher academic qualification (MD or MS).
Experience
Thorough and broad training and experience in general obstetrics.
Ability to deliver service independently without direct supervision.
Experience in routine and complex abortion care, including surgical abortion up to 23+6 weeks and provision of feticide.
Additional requirements
Agreement to travel and work in other Bristol NHS Foundation Trust sites as required.
Meets professional health requirements.
Clinical Knowledge and Skills
Up‑to‑date knowledge and experience in the relevant specialty.
Knowledge of NHS priorities for the specialty.
Broad range of IT skills.
Clinical Governance and Audit
Understanding of clinical governance and responsibilities.
Knowledge of principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation.
Positive approach to evidence‑based practice.
Recent and regular engagement with CPD scheme.
Research
Knowledge of research principles.
Experience in research (e.g., PhD).
Leadership, management, and ability to organise specialist service.
Interpersonal, communication and team working skills
Effective communication with patients, relatives and colleagues.
Good written and spoken English.
Presentation skills.
Effective working relationships across levels.
Flexible team member.
Other personal abilities and aptitudes

Training as a Consultant Appraiser.
