Director – Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) - Construction

Expat - Oversea's Opportunity in Africa

Our client is a leading engineering, construction, and infrastructure organisation delivering large-scale projects across Central and West Africa. We are partnering with them to appoint a Director – Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) who will take strategic ownership of the HSE function across a complex project portfolio based across Africa.

This is a role for an accomplished HSE leader who understands how to build a strong safety culture while balancing the operational realities of large-scale construction environments. You will be responsible for setting the HSE agenda, influencing senior stakeholders, and ensuring the highest standards of compliance, governance, and risk management across the business.

Position Overview:

This position sits firmly at the leadership level and requires a professional who can influence across all levels of the organisation. You will be expected to focus on three critical areas.

First, developing and driving the overall HSE strategy, ensuring robust governance, compliance, and continuous improvement across all projects.

Second, strengthening operational risk management and HSE performance by implementing best practices, monitoring key metrics, and ensuring lessons learned are embedded throughout the organisation.

Third, building and maintaining a proactive safety culture through visible leadership, stakeholder engagement, training, and accountability.

With significant project activity and continued growth across the region, this is an opportunity to shape the safety culture of a major organisation and leave a lasting impact on its operations.

What You Will Need:

• Extensive HSE leadership experience. A minimum of 18 years' experience within health, safety, and environmental management, including senior leadership responsibilities. You will have successfully led and developed sizeable HSE teams, ideally managing approximately 20 professionals across multiple project sites and geographically dispersed operations.

• Construction and infrastructure expertise. Proven experience within large-scale construction, engineering, infrastructure, or similarly high-risk project environments.

• Strong strategic capability. Experience designing, implementing, and leading HSE strategies, governance frameworks, and improvement programmes across multiple sites or projects.

• Technical excellence. Deep knowledge of international HSE standards, including ISO 45001 and ISO 14001, together with strong incident investigation and risk management experience.

• Professional qualifications. A degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related discipline. CMIOSH and Lead Auditor certifications are highly desirable.
