International Policy Analyst - Westminster, SW1A0PW

We are looking for an International Policy Analyst to join the House of Lords Committee Office. You will be leading on high-quality research and analysis principally on international affairs, as well as delivering written and verbal briefings and organising evidence sessions with a range of stakeholders.

This is a fascinating and highly rewarding role. You will be based in the Committees Scrutiny Unity, mainly supporting the European Affairs Committee, the International Agreements Committee, the International Relations & Defence Committee, and the Northern Ireland Scrutiny Committee.

As Policy Analyst, you will help to shape the work of these committees and will work closely with senior stakeholders within Parliament and experts in the field.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who has a keen interest and prior experience in this policy area and enjoys working in a fast paced, dynamic working environment.

Our current office policy allows home working up to three days per week (dependent on business needs), and a minimum of two days working on-site in Parliament.

You'll be accountable for -

  • Researching, analysing and briefing committees on EU legislation, international treaties, and UK legislation with implications for Northern Ireland;
  • providing ad hoc briefings on topical international issues;
  • identifying and contacting prospective oral evidence witnesses and preparing possible questions;
  • helping committee teams with longer inquiries into a range of international matters;
  • attending committee meetings to brief members orally;
  • analysing and summarising evidence submitted to the Committees;
  • working with the clerk to draft committee reports and correspondence;
  • keeping up to date with international affairs and maintaining a network of contacts;
  • providing other support as required, such as helping to organise visits and events with members of the public; and
  • assisting committees working on UK domestic policy when required.

What we're looking for -

  • 2:1 undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Substantive professional or postgraduate experience in international affairs policy.
  • Exceptional knowledge of international affairs policy
  • Proven ability to become proficient in new topics quickly.
  • Excellent and proven written communication skills, including the ability to distil large volumes of material into clear, concise, and analytical briefings and reports.
  • Strong and demonstrated oral communication skills, including the ability to represent the Committees to a wide range of stakeholders and to build and sustain a network of contacts.
  • Understanding of the political context of the Committee's work and wider public policy debates.
  • Proven ability to produce objective and balanced work unaffected by the post-holder's political or other views.
  • A track record of flexibility and resilience to produce high-quality work to tight and competing deadlines, showing initiative where appropriate.
  • Proven ability to work well with colleagues.
