Job Description
Assistant Community Gardener
Hammersmith United Charities is seeking an Assistant Community Gardener to work jointly with our Community Gardener in caring for our award-winning communal gardens. This role is vital in ensuring our gardens remain a warm, inviting space for residents and visitors throughout the year.

Role Overview

• Salary: £28,000 PA (pro rata)
• Hours: 4 Days/30 Hours per week
• Location: Across two Almshouses in Hammersmith (John Betts House and Sycamore House)
• Accountability: Reports to the Head of Housing & Property

Key Responsibilities

• Horticulture: Maintain lawns to the highest standards, including mowing, fertilizing, and weeding. Tend to herbaceous borders, shrubs, and trees
• Sustainability: Manage composting systems (including Bokashi) and utilize sustainable practices like water-wise gardening and cultivating wild areas for biodiversity
• Community Engagement: Develop opportunities for residents to garden to improve wellbeing, providing at least four workshops and one garden-related trip annually
• Events: Prepare gardens for the London Open Gardens weekend and annual competitions
• Health & Safety: Maintain all tools and machinery, ensure safe working environments, and perform "winter weather" tasks like salting and snow clearance

Person Specification

• Qualifications: Formal Horticultural qualification (e.g., RHS Level 2 or equivalent)
• Experience: Practical experience in horticulture and working in physically demanding roles
• Skills: High levels of manual dexterity and the ability to communicate effectively with residents, contractors, and volunteers
• Attributes: A supportive team player who is adaptable, resilient, and committed to personal development
