The job itself

A 27-year-old man who has Autism and Ehlers Danlos syndrome is looking for a support worker for 20 hours a week. Car driver with own car and business use is essential.

Wheelchair will be used whilst out in the community, although this is self-propelled, pushing may be required.

The ideal candidate must be flexible - The hours of work are subject to change as weekly routine changes.

Hours as a guide may be but subject to change:

Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri 12pm - 3pm and Thursday 12pm - 8pm.

However, flexibility would be required and some weekend support on occasions which would be agreed in advance. Possibility of overnight care may be required on rare occasions to be discussed further at interview.

Support will include whilst not inclusive:

  1. Prepare shopping lists then going out and doing the food shop on his behalf.
  2. Meal cooking per day. To ensure diet is vegetarian, varied and nutritious.
  3. Domestic tasks, such as washing dishes, cleaning and tidying the home, laundry, changing bedding, hoovering, dusting and other tasks as and when identified.
  4. Support outside the home to complete general tasks, recognising when feeling overwhelmed or uncomfortable and providing reassurance in these times. Tasks as support with attending appointments as an example.
  5. Advocacy - speaking on behalf when he requires as he often finds it difficult to do this.
  6. Bills and budgeting support and financial planning.
  7. Ensuring clothing is appropriate for the day and encouragement with general hygiene.
  8. To support with engagement in hobbies and interests such as k-pop, learning Korean, dancing in the home and any other interests such as attending events, attending cinema, swimming (worker is required to be in the pool with gentleman - to support and guide him in the water, encouragement) and any other interests and activities within the home and within the community.
  9. Support may be out of general hours - ie some days, hours may change to later In the evening to support with attendance at concert, cinema as an example. This will be agreed in advance.
  10. If the gentleman is nonverbal or unable to provide any guidance on tasks for that day, the worker must be able to use own initiave and undertake tasks relevant for the role.
  11. To support gentleman with ordering, collecting and organising medication into daily, weekly medication box and ensuring records ie on calendar are up to date and clear.

The candidate must be able to use their own initiative whilst also ensuring that an environment for maximising independence is maintained. The candidate must be able to be sensitive to the needs of the individual, promoting privacy and dignity.

Effective communication is essential - be thoughtful and considerate in their communication and actions and show a genuine interest in not only providing support but enabling the gentleman to be as independent as possible and achieve the most he can from his support package. Support in times of non verbal communication and discomfort will be imperative. It is essential that candidates are patient, calm, collected and caring individuals with a good sense of humour who are able to motivate, encourage and be influential if needed. 

DBS/Reference checks will be required for this post - Cost to be met by the local authority.
